Dinner and Presentation

with guest speaker John Cushing, CEO of Pier Pass Inc.

Topic of Discussion:

PierPass Inc. is a not-for-profit company created by the West Coast MTO Agreement (WCMTOA) member container terminal operators at the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach to address multi-terminal issues such as congestion, air quality and security. PierPass launched the OffPeak program in 2005 to reduce severe cargo-related congestion on local streets and highways around the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports. OffPeak established regular night and Saturday work shifts to handle trucks delivering and picking up containers at the 12 container terminals in the two adjacent ports.

The ports came under strong community and political pressure to find a solution. OffPeak nearly doubled the potential capacity of the ports without requiring taxpayer funding or waiting years for new infrastructure construction.

PierPass’s president and CEO, John Cushing, will address the OffPeak program 12 years later as well as where the program is headed.

Come enjoy dinner, network and discuss the Pier Pass program and related activities at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Cost:  DMA Members $0
Non-members $55 per person includes dinner, coffee/iced tea and dessert.

Speaker Background:

John Cushing

President and CEO

PierPass Inc.

Mr. Cushing joined PierPass Inc. in 2014 as its president and CEO, overseeing the OffPeak program.  The 12 container terminal operators in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach use the OffPeak program to mitigate traffic at the terminal gates and on the roadways and freeways in and around the Ports.

Prior to joining PierPass, from 2009 through 2013, Mr. Cushing was the General Director of SSIT container terminal.  Mr. Cushing was responsible for the green field development and opening of SSIT on the Thi Vai River at Cai Mep in the south of Vietnam.

In 1999 Mr. Cushing founded eModal and served as its president through 2009. Under his leadership, eModal developed widely used online services to coordinate activities between marine terminals and trucking companies, beneficial cargo owners, and others in the supply chain.  Mr. Cushing grew eModal into the nation's largest port community system, used at 41 marine terminals in 14 ports on both U.S. coasts.

Mr. Cushing's experience in the transportation industry began in 1982 when he worked as a steamship line agent with Barwil Agencies.  He later joined the Port of Los Angeles, where he was marketing manager until he left to start up eModal.

Mr. Cushing has a Bachelors of Science degree in Transportation from Arizona State University.
